So slingmedia, the makers of the slingbox (a device that lets you watch your tv content over the internet) released their mobile player today. Om Malik has a review and states the obvious complaints: it only runs on WindowsMobile and and it costs $30 (on top of your $250 slingbox). There’s a pretty cool demo over at cnet which shows someone in SanFran watching live NYC tv channels with full tivo functionality on his cell phone. I have absolutely no need for something like this since I haven’t had cable in about 3 years but I’m sure Dick Tracey is jealous as fuck.
In a related post, MobileCrunch asks Why Buy Sling Mobile When Orb is Free?. This is a pretty valid question when you consider that Orb, a (currently) free software app lets you stream video, photos, and music off your desktop on to any net connected device. And it’s been doing it for well over a year. I’ve never tried using it (again, I have little need) but a friend of mine has streamed his music off his PC to a wireless palm and was very impressed. If you want better proof, the article’s author explains how he watched a movie streamed off his PC to his wifi-enabled phone while cruising at 36,000 feet on a Boeing jet. Not bad for free software.
