I never understood how someone could be a talk show host. constantly praising crappy music, movies, and books would be a form of torture to me. It must feel nice, on occasion, to call someone out on national television on their foolishness.
So Friday was a pretty good day for Canada. The Prime Minister showed up in Toronto to announce that this years federal surplus isn’t even close to the $9 billion forecast. It’s actually going to be a mere $14 billion. This is Canada’s tenth straight annual surplus which has reduced the federal debt by $95 billion and reduced the debt-to-GDP ratio to 32%. It’s funny that after 8 years of complaining about the Liberals always having a bigger surplus than expected, the Conservative government has put them to shame.
I’m all for paying down the federal debt but I think it’s obviously time we change how taxes are allocated. This great op-ed from the Toronto Star points out the crazy imbalance that exists today between the federal budget and the municipal budgets of cities like Toronto. Toronto is dead broke and almost had to shut down community centers last week while Stephen Harper could literally swim in a pool of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck. I wonder how much the unforecasted $5 billion surplus came from the taxes of people and companies based in Toronto?
Then, on the same day, the Canadian dollar closed higher than the US dollar (by half a cent). In the two and half years I’ve lived in the US I’ve seen the USD go from 1.25 to 0.995. As you can imagine, this feels pretty similar to being punched to the neck. None the less, I do take a certain pride in pointing out to my American friends that their financial house is in disarray and that “Canadian money is worthless” jokes are off the table.
And it seems that Americans don’t take too kindly to “Canadian money is worth more” jokes. Stephen Colbert did a bit the other night and when he first mentioned this fact the crowd actually boo’d. And when Lewis Black slipped in a simple Canadian dollar joke the crowd had a noticeable groan. Also, watch the whole Lewis Black piece. That guy is just fucking genius.
On the Mexican invasion of Canada.
