Saw this as well but it probably can’t play 1080p media, might be able to do 720p. If all you want is SD then the XBOX is a good solution.
This method (USB patch, then extensions for the interface) has been around for a while in homebrew form. I haven’t done it yet because it’s a pain in the ass to gather all the files — the Apple TV OS is still based on OS X 10.4.
It plays 720p or 1080i. I have it hooked up with component video instead of HDMI but it still looks pretty damn good.
