rogue wave
Damn. I am some lazy ass blogger. Really, one post a month is some weak sauce. I’ve decided my problem is I’m a god-damn perfectionist. I’ve been meaning to update the style of my blog for months and add some functionality (like being able to comment on my “daily grind” postings) but I’ve been mulling over the changes for months. Months! On top of this, I’ve been trying to write a post about Chuck Klosterman’s new book for about a month now. I’ve decided that’s gotta change. First off, more frequent posts will be coming your way and I anticipate the majority of them will contain some mp3s. It seems I’ve been inspired by the postings of welcome to the midwest. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out. There’s some choice content and if you like Sufjan, you’ll love this blog.

So here we go, some random thoughts, and some mp3s…

A girl with whom I had the oddest relationship once told me her ex could always play “the right music for any group of people doing whatever activity”. Thinking this sounded pretty cool, I tried in vain to obtain this status. In retrospect, the title I was aspiring to was really just “DJ” (or “DJ with records in all genres”). It quickly became obvious to me that I would be a terrible DJ and it’s the same reason I can’t listen to radio. I want to hear what I want to hear, when I want to hear it. Considering this is exactly what a 60gig iPod is for, it’s really a testament to my frugalness that I still don’t have one. As a consolation prize to never being a DJ, I’ve determined that I can at least make a solid mixtape. You see, mixtapes only requires one person liking it and you only have to worry about them liking it at some point and time in the future, not the very moment you’re making it. But, to date, 95 percent of all the mixtapes I’ve made have been for my own consumption and, more specifically, for my car.

But for first time since I discovered Weezer’s Blue album in late 2002, there’s a full LP looping in my car non-stop. “Descended Like Vultures” by Rogue Wave is a fucking beast of pop music. I’ve only listened to it for 3 or 4 days and I suspect it will top my list of 2005 albums. This is the follow-up to their debut album “Out of the Shadow” which I told several people would make Rogue Wave famous. Fuck was I wrong. To date, I don’t think I’ve met a single person who’s ever heard of them. Seriously. Acker, who had the pleasure of seeing them in Toronto recently as they headlined across North America told me that only 20 people showed up for their gig. This, is a serious waste. I saw them (with Acker) back in Toronto over a year ago while they were opening for AC Newman. They were phenomenal live and “man alive!” did their drummer set his kit on god-damn fire. As you can imagine, I love this band. I am William Miller, they are Stillwater, and their sound is incendiary.

So without further ado, here are the goods, the first 2 tracks off Descended Like Vultures
